Expedition to Kamchatka's volcanoes - South & North

Note:
Due to the expedition character, the itinerary is only a guideline reflecting the current planning. Also, modifications to to sudden changes in weather, helicopter availability and volcanic activity are possible.
It is possible to take only part in one of the two major parts of the tour: the north group (1st half), using about 10 hrs total flight time of helicopter transfers (and providing excellent aerial photo opportunities), or the South part which is done completely by land and includes climbing some of Kamchatka's most scenic volcanoes.

11/09 Fly to Maly Semyachik (scenic flight route over Avachinsky, Koryaksky, Zhupanovsky and Karymsky). Drop off at Maly Semyachik, hike around acid lake, camp.
12/09 Hike to Karymski (20 km), night in hut
13/09 full day at Karymski, night in hut
14/09 Spare day, night in hut
15/09 Fly back to Petropawlowsk, hotel
Day 15-22 North group volcanoes
16/09 Transfer to Esso (overnight in hut)
17/09 Flight to Kljutchewskoi volcano, with stop on pass between Kamen and Kljiutchewskoi. Land next to Bezimjanii volcano, night in Tolbatschik camp
18/09 4x4 transfer to the dead forest and the north crater of Bezymianni and its lava caves. Camp
19/09 Drive to Kozirewsk. Spare day to relax, night in hut.
20/09 Drive to Shiveluch volcano. Camp.
21/09 Day trip to massiv pyroclastic flow deposits. Camp.
22/09 Drive back to Kozirewsk. Night in hut.
23/09 Kozirewsk – Petropawlowsk. Night in hotel.

For those not interested in the extensive use of helicopters to access the extremely remote (but spectacular) volcanoes of the Northern group, we propose you can take part only in the Karymski and South group part:

This part of the expedition will provide excellent aerial photo opportunities and access to the remote volcanoes of the northern group.

Karymski expedition (on request only)

Note:
Due to the expedition nature of the tour, weather conditions and other factor, the actual itinerary on location might evolve differently. For an expedition like this, flexibility is one of the most important factors, e.g. in order to be able to reschedule flights when the weather is bad etc, or to spend more time at a particular place if new conditions, e.g. an eruption, makes this worth doing. For this reason, a number of spare days have been included in the itinerary

Day 2: The former Karymski volcano observatory
Helicopterflight to the former volcano-observatory at Karymski volcano, organizing the little hut. In the evening we will do a little walk to the hot springs.

Day 3: Preparing the little hut and watching the active Karymski volcano
Cleaning up the little hut and watching the Karymski with his daily eruptions. Time for group activities in the nature

Day 4: Walking tour to the volcano caldera Akademia Nauk
Walking tour with our tents and food to the caldera Akademia Nauk with the Karymski lake. There is a nice path and after 3-4 hours we will arrive. Camping at the former fishing research hut. Visit of the fumaroles and hot springs, dinner at the fire...

Day 5: Excursion to Karymski lake in the Caldera Akademia Nauk
Excursion at the Karymski lake in the Caldera Akademia Nauk, tiding up our camp site visit of the new crater and way back to the hut at Karymski.

Day 6: Tour to the bottom of Karymski volcano
Tour to the bottom of Karymski volcano - if we have good weather conditions, we will be able to see the volcanoes at Petropawlowsk. Exkursion to the huge waterfalls of Karymskaia.

Day 8: Walking tour to Maly Semjatchik over the dry lake
Walking tour to Maly Semjatchik over the dry lake with proviant and tents. We will pass the bottom of Karymsky and through a long canyon we will get to a dry lake, where we will build our camp site.

Day 9: Way to the bottom of Maly Semyachik
Way to the bottom of Maly Semyachik along an old lava tongue. Option to take photos you couldn´t take because of weather or other causes.

Day 10: Climbing to the Maly Semjiatschik volcano
Climbing to the Maly Semjiatschik volcano, view into the turquise coloured acid lake, descent to base camp.

Day 11: Way back to Karymski observatory
Walking tour through the canyon and back to the volcano observatory of Karymski.

Physical requirements:

Although not extreme, this tour is challenging, in parts strenuous - only suitable for people in good to excellent physical condition and experience in hiking (walks on partly difficult terrain with steep passages on loose or rocky ground, total hiking walking time up to 8-10 hours, max. horizontal distances up to ca. 20 km, max. climbing during a day: 500-1500m). If you have doubt about your condition, please contact us. The distance to civilization is about 120 km, so it is a tour only for people who do not expect luxury and who do not have a problem in "surviving" in nature.

Arrival info:

Usually, Kamchatka is reached via Moscow by Aeroflot.
Airfare is NOT included in the price, but we will help coordinate flight bookings once the expedition is confirmed.

Accommodation:
Medium-grade standard hotel in Petropavlovsk, basic hut of the former volcanological observatory, and (most days) in tents. You will need a warm sleeping bag, and air mattress, even when staying at the volcanologists' hut. Outside Petropavlowsk, there are no established facilities. At the hut, a hot spring is nearby...
